about

The beautiful, iridescent colors of the Morpho are produced not by pigmentation but through the interference pattern created as light is reflected off nanostructured lamellae on the butterfly's wings.

A hologram is a recording of the interference pattern produced by the light field scattered off an object or scene as it interacts with an optically coherent reference beam. A three-dimensional image of the object can be reconstructed from this recording under illumination from an identical beam.

Iridium - atomic number 77 - is the third least-abundant element found in the Earth's crust. Much higher amounts are found in meteorites; additionally the Earth's core may contain higher concentrations. Its historical use in the nibs of fountain pens and (in powdered form) as a deep black pigment on porcelain has given way to hi-tech industrial and electronics applications. An inert, extremely dense metal, iridium is neither biologically useful nor harmful.
